Authorized NJ Station

NJ State Vehicle Inspection

We're an authorized New Jersey inspection facility at 25 Brook St in Jersey City. We handle the emissions and safety components of the NJ inspection program for passenger cars and light trucks.

The NJ Program

What NJ Inspection Covers

New Jersey requires periodic vehicle inspections that include emissions testing and a visual safety check. The frequency and specifics depend on your vehicle's age, registration year, and fuel type. We verify which requirements apply to your vehicle when you arrive.

The emissions portion checks that your vehicle's engine management system is operating within state standards and that the onboard diagnostic system isn't reporting active emissions-related faults. The safety check covers visible items like lights, horn, wipers and tires.

If your vehicle doesn't pass, we'll provide the official rejection report and explain what was found. You're not obligated to have the repair work done at our shop, though we're available if you'd like us to handle it.

What Happens

The Inspection Process

1

Arrive & Check In

Bring your vehicle registration. We'll confirm your inspection requirements and the process involved. Walk-ins are welcome for inspections during shop hours.

2

OBD Scan

For most modern vehicles, we connect to the OBD port to verify the vehicle's readiness monitors have completed and check for active emissions fault codes.

3

Safety Check

We verify headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, horn, windshield wipers and visible tire condition as required by the state program.

4

Result & Documentation

You receive your inspection result. A pass gets you the updated sticker. A rejection comes with written documentation of what the vehicle needs.

What to Bring

Inspection is straightforward when you arrive with the right items. Here's what we need from you to complete the process:

  • Current vehicle registration
  • The vehicle itself, with gas in the tank
  • No active check engine light (this will trigger a rejection)
  • Working lights, horn and wipers

If your check engine light came on recently and you're not sure why, we can diagnose it separately before the inspection. That way you'll know what you're dealing with before bringing the vehicle through the inspection lane.

Common Questions

Inspection FAQ

Most inspections are completed within 20 to 30 minutes if the vehicle passes. If there's a queue or if issues arise that require documentation, it may take a little longer. We'll give you a realistic estimate when you arrive.

You can still come in, but an active check engine light will result in a rejection because NJ inspection requires the OBD readiness monitors to be set and no active emissions fault codes. We can diagnose the issue and let you know what's involved in resolving it.

We inspect passenger cars and light trucks registered in New Jersey. If you have an unusual vehicle type or are unsure whether we handle your registration category, call us before coming in and we'll confirm.

Yes. If you bring us the rejection paperwork from another station, we can review what's needed, perform the repairs if they're within our scope, and re-inspect the vehicle here. Call us first to confirm we handle the specific repair needed.

Walk-ins are welcome for inspections during regular shop hours. If you want to come at a specific time or want to minimize waiting, calling ahead is helpful so we can give you a sense of how busy the shop is that day.
